THE DIRECTOR'S NOTE

'Building a movement'

By Rikko Voorberg, Director of the Network

Do you have something like AWoN in your country? Are you part of a multi-faith (and wider), a cross-sectoral, family of practitioners? The AWoN Practitioners are singing the praises of the European network, especially after the Annual Summit, such an important time. But what about the national level? It’s our goal and our hope to create and nurture national AWoN-like networks - where we feel at home, that feel like family.

It’s not easy - and much needed. It’s not easy because we fight often with our peers in the same sector for the same money. We have history with each other, we might not always like each other. And there’s a risk involved. Now, politics are growing worse and worse for people on the move and the receiving part of our society, we need each other. We, people who believe in a diverse and welcoming Europe, should be a force to reckon with. And we are, but we are also easily divided. And who benefits from that division? It’s not Europe, nor the person on the move.

So we have set ourselves to a task. To find a way to grow grassroots a network like AWoN. Crossing the sectors of work in migration and the cultures and religions we come from. Building a movement, a Practitioners Workers Union’ it might be - that nurtures our strengths, that builds our capacity and professionality and cares for courageous people like you all and for a welcoming Europe.

Our book is out!

It is with a very precious and hopeful gift that AWoN enters this new year of work. We are very proud to announce the publishing of 'Living in A World of Neighbours: Activists and Academics in Conversation about Multi-Faith Refugee Relief': https://wipfandstock.com/9798385235872/living-in-a-world-of-neighbours/.

This collection of pieces appears as both an archive of the rise of a unique interfaith European movement of solidarity with and support of people on the move, and a testimony to our faiths and fights, encounters and alliances, challenges and achievements. This is a milestone and a call; a step and a beacon. This is a beginning. Our deepest thanks to our three incredible editors, Ryszard Bobrowicz, Anna Hjälm and Ulrich Schmiedel for making a reality of such an unconventional piece.

Stay tuned for the announcement of our official book launch event!

PUBLIC WEBINAR

Weaponizing Democracy - What civil society can learn from Sweden's experience of authoritarian silencing

251023_-_Weaponizing_Democracy.png

A new season of Learning & Exchange is starting - join us for a thought-provoking public webinar with researcher and deacon Anna Ardin on Thursday, October 23rd at 5pm CET!

Across Europe, civil society organisations face growing restrictions, often justified as measures to “protect democracy”. Based on recent research with Swedish civil society leaders, this session reveals how negative labelling – such as being branded “extremist” or “undemocratic” – operates as a tool for exclusion, discouraging participation and reshaping the boundaries of legitimate democratic engagement. Participants will gain insights into recognising these mechanisms, understanding their impact on trust and pluralism, and exploring strategies to defend civic space and human rights in increasingly polarised contexts.

With Anna Ardin, researcher, deacon and AWoN Network Member
Anna Ardin is a researcher and deacon with long experience from the Swedish civil society, including leadership roles in faith-based and rights-based organisations. Her current research explores how discursive labelling – such as being branded “extremist” – shapes the space for democratic participation.

 HELP US STAY AFLOAT

We love your support!

A World of Neighbours’ mission is to empower migration practitioners through maintaining an interreligious and cross sectoral peer-to-peer support network of practitioners. We foster a “community of practice” among those working on the front lines of accompaniment of people on the move, and social cohesion.

AWoN is the only network of its type - and we need your support to keep up the good work.
