THE DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Meet up and organize

'

By Rikko Voorberg, Director of the Network

“May you live in interesting times” - is a supposed curse. Interesting meaning: times of turmoil and darkness. Well, A World of Neighbours is created for interesting times.

And no one could have predicted a decade ago how interesting these times of today would turn out to be. So what to do in this worsening climate? We are busy organizing our single most important meet-up, the Annual Summit, in Poland off all places. Right at the border with Belarus. And we are doubling our efforts on Young A World of Neighbours, organising a parallel Youth Summit also in Poland and early next year in Brussels. What to do when times are tough? Meet-up and organise. Meet-up online and offline. Organise our way through this, slowly and steadily. And just as important: breathe, help each other to breathe. To remember we are not doing sprints, not even a marathon, we are on a life long journey - taking new generations along while we are doing the work.

After presenting some stories of my recent visit to the Westbank and the People’s Peace Summit in Jerusalem, sharing stories on the Palestinian Circus School - one practitioner said: 'if they can still do Circus Schools in the Westbank and in Gaza, then I am for sure not going to give up'. At AWoN, we are working our way into the future together with our partners, practitioners, funders and all people of all kinds of faith for a diverse and welcoming Europe.

ANNUAL SUMMIT

2025 Annual Summit on the way!

It is the one moment in the year when migration practitioners from all around Europe gather for days of heartfelt conversations, support and celebration. It is where collaborations begin and struggles organize. And it, each time, takes us where we feel we are most needed. As Poland just elected its new President, right-wing and anti-immigration Karol Nawrocki, it feels more right than ever to come stand by our Polish practitioners and allies to insist on our demand for and dedication to a humane, welcoming and diverse Europe. We cannot wait for September and another beautiful time of connection, resistance and solidarity.

Summer gift! We are pleased to announce that the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has confirmed their support of A World of Neighbours starting in June. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the humanitarian relief and development arm  of the United Methodist Church (UMC), a non-profit organisation operated under the auspices of the General Board of Global Ministries. Their financial contribution of 30,000 euros will help support AWoN’s core costs, the expansion of the Network, the Learning & Exchange programme, and a multifaith literacy project. We are grateful and honoured by UMCOR’s trust in our mission.

WEBINAR

Interreligious lessons from House of One

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming webinar: 'Building a House of One for a World of Neighbours', a conversation with Roland Stolte, Osman Örs and Nathalie Marie-Rose, who will be sharing with us about the unique and ambitious project of hosting three religions in one place in the heart of Berlin: House of One. In our dream of A World of Neighbours, there would be many houses of one. It thus will be an honour to learn from and exchange with the three of them.

 HELP US STAY AFLOAT

We love your support!

A World of Neighbours’ mission is to empower migration practitioners through maintaining an interreligious and cross sectoral peer-to-peer support network of practitioners. We foster a “community of practice” among those working on the front lines of accompaniment of people on the move, and social cohesion.

AWoN is the only network of its type - and we need your support to keep up the good work.
