THE DIRECTOR'S NOTE

'Living a bit of the future we hope to see'

if '

By Rikko Voorberg, Director of the Network

Holidays feel strange sometimes. The people we work with often can’t afford any break - or have the difficulty of continuous boredom and no work to take a vacation from.

The reality of people on the move in Europe can be grim and the work of migration practitioners is never ending. Still, if I can’t take care of my own - and my own family, who am I to suppose I can be of support to someone else? It’s often easier to help someone else take time off than to do it myself.

If it’s really hard to stay away from the job, maybe you can find a place in a forest or near the water to read; Alexander Kustov for example, ‘in our interest, how democracies can make immigration popular’. Or migration-mythbuster Hein de Haas' ‘How Migration Really Works’. But maybe you just need good literature, poetry or music - or nothing but the sound of nature, friends and loved ones.

A World of Neighbours is as a community of practice both fighting evil and living a bit of the future we hope to see - diverse, personal, joyful and real, interdependent and honest. And we learn every day new things on how to do this. Happy to announce in this newsletter our new ‘Human Connector’ and our Youth branch! Thank you all for making it happen with us.

ERASMUS+ grant to support Youth-AWoN!

IMG_2966.jpg

Youth-AWoN, the project aimed at fostering the next generation of migration practitioners and interfaith dialogue leaders is back! Thanks to the generous support of the ERASMUS+ programme, and in collaboration with ArteWeda and Voicify, YAWoN will be holding its very first summit this fall in Warsaw! Taking place from 12–14 September 2025, it will bring together 20 young participants between 18 and 30 years old from the Netherlands, Poland, and Belgium, and from different cultural and religious backgrounds, along with facilitators. The summit will focus on intercultural and interfaith dialogue, storytelling, and youth advocacy. Through creative workshops and dialogue, participants (many with lived migration experience) will explore themes such as democracy, social inclusion, a diverse and welcoming Europe. This gathering will launch a year-long youth-led process that will culminate in a policy roundtable in Brussels. We cannot wait to see it take off!

Stay tuned for more YAWoN updates and learn more about ERASMUS+.

Meet our Human Connector !

AWoN Crew is growing! Sabina Esp, a social worker from Sweden, accompanied refugees for more than fifteen years and has been part of AWoN since 2019. She now is joining the team under the beautiful title of Human Connector - a precious part-time position made possible by a grant from UMCOR. The role aims to focus on nurturing the ‘people-over-projects’ spirit of AWoN: connecting members, encouraging collaboration, and ensuring everyone feels seen, supported, and involved. Sabina will reach out to practitioners and other network members and be their main point of contact, share updates and collect insights to strengthen ties and enhance collective intelligence. Welcome and thank you, Sabina!

2025 Annual Summit

WhatsApp_Image_2025-06-11_at_19.01.30.jpeg

It is the one moment in the year when migration practitioners from all around Europe gather for days of heartfelt conversations, support and celebration - AWoN 2025 Annual Summit is around the corner, and there is still time to register for Practitioners who wish to join! We cannot wait to see you in Poland in September!

 HELP US STAY AFLOAT

We love your support!

A World of Neighbours’ mission is to empower migration practitioners through maintaining an interreligious and cross sectoral peer-to-peer support network of practitioners. We foster a “community of practice” among those working on the front lines of accompaniment of people on the move, and social cohesion.

AWoN is the only network of its type - and we need your support to keep up the good work.
